More About Nancy Navarro

Nancy Navarro was elected to the Montgomery County Council in May of 2009, in a special election to fill the seat of the late Don Praisner. She currently serves on the Management & Fiscal Policy Committee, as well as the Health & Human Services Committee.

Prior to serving at the Council, Nancy was a member of the Montgomery County Board of Education (BOE). She was first appointed by the BOE in October 2004 to fill the term of the vacant District 5 seat. In 2006, she was elected to a four-year term, and was elected President in 2006 and 2007, respectively. During her tenure at the Board, she has focused her efforts on Kindergarten readiness, advancing the achievement of the county’s neediest students, strengthening parent engagement, and increasing BOE accountability to its stakeholders.

Background

Nancy has resided in Montgomery County for 16 years. She was born in Caracas, Venezuela, and she is a 1987 graduate of the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her degree is in psychology.

In 1998, she co-founded a nonprofit, community-based organization whose mission is to assist the economic and educational development of Latino and other immigrant communities in Montgomery County. She co-directed the program for six years.

During the summer of 2007, she participated in the Public Education Leadership Project (PELP) at Harvard University, where the Montgomery County Public School team focused on race, poverty, and the achievement gap.

She attended the Harvard Leadership Institute in 2007 and 2008.

Nancy and her husband live in Colesville. They have two daughters who attend Montgomery County Public Schools.
