QUALITY PUBLIC EDUCATION

As President of the Board of Education, I’ve worked hard to create high academic expectations for all students and to prepare our children for success in the global marketplace. I am running for County Council to continue this mission. I will work day and night to see that all of our children enjoy opportunities to achieve their greatest potential.

• Experience: As President of the Montgomery County Board of Education, I have managed a $2 billion dollar budget, representing half our county’s budget.
• Diversity: I lead a public school system that is the largest in Maryland and 16th largest in the county. We proudly represent one of the most diverse student bodies in the country, serving children from 167 countries and backgrounds.
• Achievement: I have championed closing the achievement gap – and we have! Of the 137,745 thousand students in our schools, we have a graduation rate of 91.4% and our multicultural school environment has gained national attention for student achievement.
• Dedication: I have been dedicated to supporting Montgomery County’s 11,000 teachers and nearly 22,000 school employees as a centerpiece in her administration. The results are in our children’s performance!

As a County Councilwoman, I will continue to support Montgomery County schools by fighting to secure funding and policies to:

• Expand Pre-K: Establish universal pre-kindergarten education to provide comprehensive early childhood learning
• Forge Partnerships: Prepare our students for the new world economy, by engaging key partners, such as community leaders, county agencies, and business leaders
• Expect Success: Enhance academic expectations through continued improvements in curriculum content and professional development
• Involve Parents: Support parental involvement in schools through the provision of appropriate staff support and resources in every large elementary and middle school
• Increase Accountability: Provide taxpayers with a budget process that is fully transparent and accountable
